CREATING MACHINE EMBROIDERY WITH ALISON HOLT:Flowers and Landscapes
Made in conjunction with Andrew Galli of Studio Galli and Myk Briggs of The Bakery Studio

This is a really exciting way to learn machine embroidery. If you can't attend a course with me this is the next best thing!

If have any of my books or have been on one of my courses this is the perfect way to increase your knowledge and experience.

In this 3 hours 27 minutes DVD using only straight stitch and zigzag I show you a variety of stitch techniques for flowers and foliage and how to produce silk painted backgrounds for two flower projects. Combining all the skills learnt in the first half of the DVD I go on to show you a detailed landscape embroidery, Penylan Lane, combining painting on silk with embroidered trees, hedgerows and wild flowers.

With the close ups and clever camera angles this is almost better than taking a workshop with me! If you really want to get an insight into how I work and start on machine embroidery as a hobby this DVD is perfect for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you bind the hoop?
You can tear a 1 inch wide strip of lightweight woven fabric or use cotton tape made for binding seams etc. After winding it around the inner hoop you can hand stitch the end in place or secure it with a small piece of adhesive tape

What silk do you use?
White medium weight 8mm Habutai silk

What silk paints do you use?
Deka Silk Paints or any make that are water based and heat fixed with an iron

What make of sewing machine do you use?
A Bernina 714 (1965 model) in my studio. Bernina 1020 and a Bernina 1008 when demonstrating my work.

What size needles?
80/12 - universal

What type of thread?
I prefer cotton, weight 50, from Maderia, Aurifil, Presencia and Guterman but you can use any threads that you own

Do you use a hoop?
I always use an 8inch wooden hoop and no presser foot. The fabric needs to be very tight in the hoop then the stitches cannot gather the fabric.

The feed dogs are lowered, this allows you freedom to move the hoop in any direction.

Changing the speed you move the hoop will produce a long or short stitch length (as long as the machine is running at a constant speed)
