FREEHAND MACHINE EMBROIDERY COURSES WITH ALISON
Student Course Requirements
For my courses you will require the equipment in the
MACHINE EMBROIDERY and SILK PAINTING lists below

If you have any trouble sourcing items please note all items marked with a £ may be purchased from the tutor and all items marked with an X may be borrowed from the tutor for courses in the UK.

MACHINE EMBROIDERY Requirements

An electric sewing machine, well maintained, a basic machine that you are familiar with is ideal, you dont need a computerised model. Preferably with :-
An extension table to support the hoop
A removable bobbin case so the bobbin tension can easily be altered.
A stitch width control dial (easier to control than push button controls)
The feed dogs can be lowered
Spare bobbin case if you prefer not to alter the tension on your usual case

X Photographs for inspiration/detail appropriate to the course. These can be prints or available on a tablet/laptop to use

£ Two 8 inch wooden embroidery hoops with metal screw on outer hoop (With inner hoop bound with cotton tape)
1 for practice and 1 for your picture

X Large screwdriver for tightening embroidery hoop screw

X Small screwdriver for altering tension on machine bobbin case

£ Natural medium weight silk (Habutai 8mm) as background fabric for painting and embroidery

£ Air/water-soluble pen or erasable fabric marker to transfer design on to silk

£ Selection of sewing machine threads, all types can be used

Embroidery scissors with sharp pointed ends

Medium weight cotton fabric or similar to practice stitch techniques

Spare bobbins for machine

Spare machine needles size 12/80 or similar

Notepad, pencil and ruler

Tracing paper or clear acetate and fine black waterproof pen

X 2 x L-shaped cards for framing/cropping images

SILK PAINTING Requirements

£ Clear gutta in a pipette with a medium sized metal gutta nib ( 0.5mm or 0.7mm ) to help control the flow of the gutta

£ Fabric paints or dyes that are transparent and heat fixed (The use of the tutors DEKA silk paints for the course is an option for £4.00)

X Square wooden frame to stretch silk on for painting (approximately 15 x 15 ins. An old or cheap canvas works well

X £ Silk pins (3 pronged) or drawing pins to secure silk to wooden frame

X Hair dryer to speed up the painting process

X Assorted watercolour paintbrushes i.e. 3 or 4 brushes (size range from 0 to 8)

X Palette, with divisions, preferably white ceramic (easier to clean)

X Water pot

Kitchen paper to dry brushes

There is a Bernina 1008 sewing machine to hire from Alison - £40 for a 3 day course
